Using Excuses For Missing Class As they Truly Are
There are many good excuses for missing class that students can make, but they don’t always come so easily. One of the most common reasons as to why students don’t give themselves enough credit by not showing up is because they don’t feel like they have a good enough excuse for not showing up. It could be that they feel like they haven’t done enough studying or researching and they don’t feel they have a good enough reason to go into class. They may also not want to miss out on the friends that they have made during their free time at home or at school.
When people try to justify their lack of attendance, they make two main mistakes. The first one is when they mistake good excuses for missing class as good excuses. For instance, they will tell you that they had to wait in line for three hours before they were allowed to sign up for the course that day. While this is a valid excuse for your inconvenience, it doesn’t actually make you a good excuse for missing class.
The second common mistake that students make is confusing good excuses with real good excuses. You see, a good excuse is something that you are not able to do anymore. You wouldn’t just dismiss a good excuse for being late, would you? So, if you are given a good excuse for missing class, that doesn’t make you a good excuse for missing school.
The other problem with good excuses for not showing up is that they don’t actually help your situation. What’s the point of having an excuse if you are not going to use it to get into class on time? If the administration allows it, that is a good excuse. But, if they forbid it, that’s a real good excuse. Using a good excuse to get out of attending class is a good way to have your grades docked, not to mention your friends’ and family’s embarrassment.
You also don’t want to use excuses as a crutch. An excuse may work for a few moments, but eventually your brain is going to realize that it’s not really worth it. That’s why it’s so important to stay focused. Even if you think that you’re going to be too busy to go to class, make sure that you still show up. An excuse that ends up getting you in trouble will make it much more likely for you to forget what you were supposed to be doing and wind up missing class.
Finally, make sure that you don’t waste time by lying about your absences. It might seem like a good idea to give your teacher a lie about how long you’ve been sick, but this type of action can get you in even more trouble. Not only can you wind up getting in trouble for false information, but you’ll also end up wasting time waiting for your absences to appear on your teacher’s records. Give yourself the best chance possible by telling the truth, even if it’s not the best way to cover up your absences.
If your absences are caused by illness or unavoidable circumstances, then you might want to avoid class as much as possible. In order to make sure that you’re able to get by with minimal disruptions, it’s important to set goals for when you expect to return to class. Write down when you want to be in class, what you want to accomplish, and how much you need to study. Then, prioritize your goals for the class so that you’re more likely to actually show up. You’ll also make it much easier to stay on track with your goals once you return.
If your absences are caused by a health condition, such as congestive heart failure, kidney disease, chronic pain, depression, or substance abuse, don’t tell anyone about them. You don’t want to risk becoming dependent on these medications to feel normal. And besides, once people find out about your medical problems, you may find that they’ll stop inviting you to class. In order to avoid feeling pressured to use medications to mask your absences, you should start making plans to improve your health now. That means taking walks, going for runs, eating right, and getting plenty of rest. By thinking clearly and maintaining your personal and academic goals, you’ll be able to use excuses for missing class as they truly are: an excuse.
